Quah Ting Wen finished sixth fastest in the women’s 200 metres freestyle qualifying heat, and will feature in Saturday evening’s final at 6pm.

The 18 year old timed 2mins 4.07sec to make the cut for the final.

Team mate Lynette Lim was 10th quickest. She will be second reserve swimmer for the final.

Meanwhile in the 100 metres butterfly, Tao Li will also compete in the final after finishing fourth fastest overall.

Defending her bronze medal from four years ago, Tao Li clocked 59.42sec on Saturday morning to reach the final.

In 50 metres breast stroke, Samantha Yeo finished 12th overall, while in the men’s 200 butterfly, Rainer Ng missed out on a place in the final by just seven-tenth of a second.

On the other hand, in shooting, Jasmine Ser came within one point of qualifying for the final in the women’s 10 metres Air rifle event.

The 20 year old, who is nursing a flu, managed 396 points to finish ninth in qualifying.

Her teammates Cheng Jian Huan ranked 42nd while Goh Jia Yi was 45th.

In the men’s 50 metres Air Pistol event, Poh Lip Meng ranked 12th with 553 points, while Nigel Lim was 25th.

Gai Bin meanwhile, finished 27th in qualifying.

In the men’s 10 metre Air Rifle event, Ong Jun Hong became Singapore’s top performer, after finishing 11th with 591 points.

Zhang Jin finished in 25th place ahead of Jonathan Koh in 26th.

Overall, Singapore’s shooters missed out on medals in six events on the first day’s programme.

As for table tennis, the women’s team opened its campaign with a three-nil win over Maldives.

Paddlers Wang Yuegu, Feng Tianwei and Li Jiawei all made quick work of their opponents, winning in straight games.

The women paddlers also won their second group match of the day after beating India three-nil.

With the win, Singapore will sit atop Group B with four points.

The team will face Laos in the final group match on Sunday.

Singapore’s men’s team also opened with a three-nil victory, brushing aside Mongolia.

Meanwhile in Cuesports, Singapore’s Peter Gilchrist is through to the quarter-finals of the Men’s English Billiards Singles event.

The 42-year-old defeated Thailand’s Thawat Sujarit-thurakarn 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

In the Men’s 8-ball Pool singles event, Chan Keng Kwang lost 7-5 to South Korea’s Lee Kang.

In the women’s 6-Red Snooker event, Charlene Chai and Hoe Shu Wah lost 3-0 to their opponents from India.

Darren, from the Singapore Sports School, won the World Byte Championships in 2010 and 2009 while Ting Wen, from Raffles Institution, won five gold medals at the 2009 SEA Games.

Darren and Ting Wen were chosen from a field of student athletes who received the Best School Boy and Best School Girl awards for their respective sports. This is a new award given out by the Singapore School Sports Council (SSSC).
